The human experience is rife with symbols, myths and spirituality. As the frenetic pace of life continues to berate society into a distracted existence it is easy to gloss over these very things that have made human consciousness and creativity so profound.
Many have felt the religious and spiritual emptiness of these domineering urban centers. The days of seeking answers in the stars and moving with the rhythm of the moon is little more than a romantic reverie. What innuendos and metaphor can be found in our modern ‘natural’ environments?
In the tradition of street photography, Jessica explored the subterranean sectors of London to see what ineffable qualities of human happenings were still present. The images in his book have been arranged to explore the symbolic undertones revealed during the exploration of this theory; the theory that we are the holy, we are the damned, we are the enlightened. The symbols, however weakened or aged, are all around us.
“The symbol has suffered the same fate as myth. It has greatly degenerated in Western society. The life of modern man is swarming with half-forgotten myths, decaying hierophanies and secularized symbols. Symbols have fallen into the state of ‘superstition and economic- cum- aesthetic value.’- a condition common in modern societies. They have lost their religious meaning and have only social or artistic value. They have become more rationalized, degraded, and infantilized. Inferior symbolism is found also in traditional societies, but it is much more rampant in our own. Archaic man still posses the primal symbols, such as the moon, stars, the sun, and so on. For this reason he is more aware of the reality of the sacred. Modern man, living in an artificially created environment has a deeper chasm between himself and the holy.
… There is, however, still some hope for modern man because the degraded images and symbols which he still posses can be the point of departure for his spiritual revival.”
